Why Use a Patch Template?
You won’t need to try to draw a council strip or lodge flap freehand. Print a template, sketch inside the lines, and you’ll know your design fits a real patch shape at its real size. Every template shows the finished size, the price size, and the smallest letters that will stitch cleanly.

Laser-cut shapes have a detailed outline that follows the design, like the points of a fleur-de-lis. All templates have a minimum letter height of 1/4″.
How Patch Size Is Measured for Pricing
Average the Two Sides
Patch price size is (height + width) ÷ 2, rounded up to the next price break. A 5″ × 2″ council strip prices as a 3.5″ patch.
Diamonds Are Measured on the Side
A diamond is priced by the length of its side, as a square, not tip to tip. A 3″ diamond is 4.24″ tip to tip but prices as 3″.
Tips for Designing Your Patch
- Keep letters at least 1/4″ tall. Smaller text won’t stitch cleanly.
- Stay inside the border. Leave room for the stitched edge around the outside.
- Simple beats busy. Bold shapes and a few colors read best from across the room.
- Bigger shows more detail. We suggest 3.5″ for most designs; about 90% also work at 3″ to save money.
- Don’t worry about perfect art. A pencil sketch is fine. Full art services are included, and our artists turn your sketch into a patch.
Use the Templates for a Patch Contest
Patch design contests are a great way to get Scouts invested in an event. Print a template for each Scout, give them a week, and let the Troop or Pack vote. The winner’s sketch becomes the real patch. Pick the shape first so every entry fits the same outline, and remind everyone about the 1/4″ letter height.

Are the patch templates really free?
Yes. Download the PDF and print as many copies as you need for personal or unit use. No sign-up needed.
What size is a standard council strip?
Our council strip template is 5″ wide by 2″ tall, and it prices as a 3.5″ patch.
What size is an OA lodge flap?
The lodge flap templates are 5″ × 2″, the same price size as a council strip (3.5″). The PDF also has a 5″ × 5″ pocket patch template with a lodge flap on top.
What is the smallest text that works on a patch?
Keep letters at least 1/4″ tall. Smaller text tends to blur together in thread.
How is a patch’s size figured for pricing?
Add the height and width and divide by 2, then round up to the next price break. Diamonds are measured by the length of one side, not tip to tip.
Can I get a shape that isn’t in the templates?
