Neckerchiefs in Scouting
Baden Powell included neckerchiefs as part of the uniform of scouting. They served a practical purpose: as a triangular bandage. Neckerchiefs were included as part of the first scout uniforms. Referred to as neckers or scarfs. Baden Powell said “Every Troop has is own scarf color, since the honour of your Troop is bound up in the scarf, you must be very careful to keep it tidy and clean.” Originally scouts used knots to tie the neckerchief, but now neckerchief slides or woggles are used. Troops often identified themselves by all wearing the same color blank neckerchief. Scouts often sewn a patch of a favorite event or service project on their blank scout neckerchiefs to show their scout spirit!
