ClassB @ NOAC 2012
August 9, 2012

Last week, we had the AMAZING experience of attending the 2012 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.

Jonah, an Eagle Scout and one of the ClassB team members to attend, said, “I hadn’t realized just how huge Order of the Arrow really was, nor how much it really enhances the Scouting experience until I was given the opportunity to visit the 2012 NOAC.” From being an exhibitor at the Adventure Central EXPO to attending nightly shows and events, we were fortunate to share the NOAC experience with the over 7,000 Arrowmen who attended. Here are some highlights of the trip.

Coosa Lodge Rocks!

Opening Show

We really had no idea what to expect when we arrived to the Breslin Center the first night of NOAC. The first lodge on the scene with crazy awesome hats was Coosa Lodge. (Coosa Rocks!)

The energy of the opening show was incredible along with some truly professional stage, lighting and sound work from Scouts. Gregg, an Eagle Scout, OA member and our VP, described his first NOAC experience, “I wish I’d made it to NOAC as a Scout. The opening show was incredible and got me pumped up for the week even though I wasn’t an attendee.”

Jonah & Kristen learning about Composite Materials

Exploring NOAC

After setting up the ClassB booth (more on that later), we explored NOAC a bit. We made two-part resin neckerchief slides at the Composite Materials booth, saw some epic patch trading blankets and got an idea for just how much fun Arrowmen like to have – which is good, because we also showed up to have a great time!

Also impressive was the support from the Greater Lansing, Michigan community. All the businesses nearby had prominent signage welcoming the Boy Scouts of America and many were even giving away free t-shirts!

Adventure Central EXPO & the ClassB Booth

There’s just something cool about being on an ice arena floor for three days. Take over 7,000 Arrowmen who are looking for an air conditioned break between a hectic NOAC event schedule and give them a game to play and you’ll have plenty of fun!

Kristen, aka “the ClassB girl,” ran our Toss & Win game until she lost her voice. But, for the thousands of Scouts who played, it was well worth the wait. We gave out 100 limited edition Eagle patches, 900 regular Eagle patches, ~3,000 flying discs, and 10,000 pens to eager Arrowmen. You juggled for bonus prizes, had your mascots pose for us and, of course, threw underhand and gently!

Closing Show

The end of NOAC was sad for us. While, of course, we were at the event to tell people about our t-shirts and patches, we also made new friends and had a great time. But, the best way to end a once-in-a-lifetime experience is with a great blow-out party!

We donated 1,000 flying discs just for that occasion and the NOAC Radio station blasted those during their “Pre-Show Insanity” show. As it turns out, flying discs also double as great fans to stay cool. ;) Once inside, the “Human Sacrifices” show really showed off the depth and quality of show we’d come to expect from NOAC. And, what better way to close a show than to lead 7,000 people in karaoke to classic rock tunes and shower them with 250 lbs. of confetti?! In that moment, all of the bonds forged over the week-long conference were more prominent than ever.

This was an incredible experience for us and we’re totally looking forward to returning for NOAC 2015 to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow!

I have a name list to add to my design, how do I add the names?
July 12, 2012

We have many designs that can include name lists. It adds a unique personal touch for any family reunion, graduating class, teams and crews.

In the Custom T-shirt Designer, you should see the design on the left and the design elements on the right.

Design on the left and Design Elements on the Right

Notice all of the text elements on the right labelled “Name”

Choose the first “Name” element which should bring you to the edit text window. In the text box on the left, type in the name you want. Press the preview button in the bottom left corner to see you changes on the design. Once the preview window is updated, adjust positioning for the name appropriately.

This is the edit page for the names

Notice the window at the top left corner with Phillip and the preview showing Phillip in bigger font than the rest.

Font sizes and colors can be manipulated in the sections to the right of the preview window. If you want help in designing your t-shirt, please don’t hesitate to call in and work with one of the customer representatives.

Don’t worry about getting everything exactly centered and aligned. This is just a rough draft so as long as all the names are spelled correctly, one of our professional artists will make any necessary final adjustments.

If you have more names than space on the shirt, please email the list to questions@classb.com and one of the representatives will be in touch. We will be more than happy to do the heavy lifting for you.

Congratulations to Ryan Wilson for achieving Eagle rank
December 22, 2011

Ryan WilsonRyan Wilson

Last week Ryan Wilson, 29, achieved Eagle rank. Not only did he achieve this distinguished honor, but he earned almost double the merit badges required – a total of 38. Only 5% of the scouting population reaches Eagle and only a few scouts with Down syndrome have achieved this honor.

Ryan, who has Down syndrome and a heart condition, is not only an inspiring role model for other special needs children but he’s an example to us all reminding us that with determination and dedication, anything is possible. He’s an example of everything that the scouting program stands for – developing character through skill development, doing good deeds, and living his life in accordance with the Scout Law.

We’re proud of our local Pasco County hero. Congratulations to Ryan Wilson for a job well done!

Congratulations to the winner of the ClassB® 4-H Community Improvement Grant!
December 7, 2011

Canyon County Multi-Taskers

We want to extend our appreciation to all of the groups who applied and sent us their project ideas. Hats off to each and every one of you! We hope that you will continue with your projects and help make your communities safer, healthier and happier places to live.

Below is a summary the winning project. Make sure to check back over the coming weeks and months as we will be giving updates on their progress and showcasing their project upon completion.

Project Name: Generation Garden Project

Project Summary: They will use the funds to develop a small gardening area at an amenable retirement and/or assisted living facility in Nampa, ID.  This will be a great way to outreach 4H youth with the elderly in a positive manner, as well as creating a rewarding recreation for those desiring to be involved. They will work directly with residents to build the garden structure. Together they will plant and sow climate appropriate fruits and vegetables, maintain the garden, and assist in harvest and distribution of said garden to the facility. Youth members will learn the importance of community outreach, the ability to create and maintain a garden, the recreational benefits of gardening, as well as the need for availability of fresh fruits and vegetables for everyone.

Again, congratulations to the Canyon County Multi-Taskers and kudos to all of the other groups who submitted their projects. We understand the importance of the 4-H program in the lives of youth in the community and we are confident that communities all over the country will benefit from the projects that were submitted.

Many of us here at ClassB enjoy the benefits of tending our own home vegetable gardens. It can be such an incredibly rewarding experience. As your garden grows, so do the joys of cooking home grown vegetables, sharing your crops with family and friends, and spending quality time with your fellow farmers outside in the sunshine. We hope this grant will help the Canyon County Multi-Taskers complete the generation garden that they’ve envisioned. We can’t wait to see the finished project!

The rewards from a garden can often show up in unexpected ways. Especially when you involve your family or friends. Do you have a home vegetable garden? Tell us about some of the rewards your home garden has given to you.

Festival of Lights in Downtown Zephyrhills
December 6, 2011

A Winning Design!

This year’s Festival of Lights parade in downtown Zephyrhills kicked off the holiday season with some hometown family fun!  It started off at 6pm with a parade and the events kept going until 9pm with a bounce house, raffles, and local dance performances for everyone to enjoy. There were even sightings of Santa, Elvis and clowns galore.

We’re located directly on 5th Avenue downtown, so we had a front row seat to all the festivities. This year we held our first ClassB® Holiday Drawing Contest. Talented kids between the ages of 5-17 gathered on our front patio to draw their very own holiday themed masterpiece. Each child’s drawing was entered into the contest for a chance to win their artwork printed on a t-shirt. Every child got a gift for participating and 15 young artists got their design printed on a t-shirt!

This year’s winners were:

Ages 5-9:  Ali & Kayla

Ages 10-13:  Dominique

Ages 14-17:  Chelsea

This year was so much fun, we hope to do it again next year.

Check out all the photos and the winning artwork on our Flickr page.

Happy Holidays from ClassB®

$500 Grant Winner 2010 – Brown County 4-H
November 30, 2011

Brown County 4-H

Want to know what last year’s 4-H Grant winner did with their $500 ClassB® Community Improvement Grant?

The Brown County 4-H SET Club’s project was to place mile markers along 6 miles of the East River Trail System. In order to do this, they split into 6 teams and collected data along the trail using surveyor grade GPS units provided by MI-Tech Services, Inc. Each member of the group got a chance to collect the GPS data and record it for their assigned section of the trail. At each marker they would spray paint the distance on the road for post installation later. Now there are brand new mile marker posts located every 10th of a mile on the East River Trail.

They included this message of thanks in their project packet:
The 4-H members of the Brown Co. SET Club are so proud to have been a part of making the East River Trail safer for all the people who use it. We are thankful to Phil Paradies, Howard Herrild, MI_Tech Services, Incl, Brown Co. 911 System and especially, Judy Wolniakowski, our 4-H youth agent for making this opportunity possible.
Thank you to the ClassB®

Improvement Foundation for selecting us as 2011 community improvement grant recipients. Our 4-H SET Club is so proud to have been a part of the Brown County Geospatial East River Trail 911 Project. Thank you again!

November 29, 2011

Eric Hilferding, President, ClassB ClassB® is honored to be the featured licensee in this year’s October issue of BSA® Licensing Insider. BSA® Licensing Insider is a monthly newsletter that provides new information from the Licensing Department of Boy Scouts of America®.

Topics include: new products, featured vendors, program updates and events.

In this issue, they interviewed Eric Hilferding and Gregg Hilferding our President and Vice President regarding how ClassB®‘s business values stem from the Scout Law they both learned from growing up in the Scouting® program:  —
“We’re Scouters first,” explained Gregg Hilferding, vice president of marketing we do our best to run ClassB® by our Scouting values. For example, our customer service reps strive to be Helpful and Friendly. We’ll replace an order we made an error on to be Trustworthy. We try to keep costs down by being Thrifty. We reduce our environmental impact to be Clean. While we don’t call our departments “patrols” or our CEO an “SPL,” the values of Scouting permeate everything we do. We’re pretty sure our customers can tell the difference that makes in our personal interaction, and in our products.
