Course Planning Tips
Start With the Patch
Set the course theme early and design the patch first. The shirt design usually follows it.
Order to Your Rosters
Size shirts and jackets from your participant and staff rosters, not guesses. Reorders for late additions are easy.
Patches 6–8 Weeks Out
Staff reviews of the patch design take the most time. Shirts are quicker and can follow.
Plan the Gifts Together
Order patches, name tags, and gifts at the same time so everything arrives before the course.
Wood Badge Course FAQ
What do course directors usually order?
Most courses order a course patch for every participant and staff member, course t-shirts with a staff version, name tags, and a gift or two. Many staffs also add embroidered jackets, polos, or hats with the Wood Badge logo.
Can you put the Wood Badge logo on our course gear?
Yes. ClassB has been an Official Scouting America Licensee since 2006, so we can use the official Wood Badge logo on your course patches, shirts, and embroidered apparel, and we make sure it’s used correctly.
Where can participants buy critter gear?
Individual Scouters and patrols can shop critter patches, patrol shirts, hats, coins, and gifts in our Wood Badge store, or start at our Wood Badge critter gear page.
How far ahead should we order?
Start the course patch 6–8 weeks before the course. The patch is what takes time, mostly staff reviews of the design. Shirts are quicker, and the shirt design usually follows the approved patch. Most patch orders arrive in 4–5 weeks, including artwork approval. Rush options are available.
Is the design really free?
Yes. Councils get full art services at no charge on patches, shirts, and name tags. Send your course theme or a sketch, and you’ll approve an online proof before anything is made.
How does council pricing work for a course?
Course orders placed through your council on an official council purchase order get council pricing. Work with your council’s training or program staff on the PO, and send a copy with your first order so we can set up the account. More on council pricing.
