Canyon County Multi-Taskers

We want to extend our appreciation to all of the groups who applied and sent us their project ideas. Hats off to each and every one of you! We hope that you will continue with your projects and help make your communities safer, healthier and happier places to live.

Below is a summary the winning project. Make sure to check back over the coming weeks and months as we will be giving updates on their progress and showcasing their project upon completion.

Project Name: Generation Garden Project

Project Summary: They will use the funds to develop a small gardening area at an amenable retirement and/or assisted living facility in Nampa, ID. This will be a great way to outreach 4H youth with the elderly in a positive manner, as well as creating a rewarding recreation for those desiring to be involved. They will work directly with residents to build the garden structure. Together they will plant and sow climate appropriate fruits and vegetables, maintain the garden, and assist in harvest and distribution of said garden to the facility. Youth members will learn the importance of community outreach, the ability to create and maintain a garden, the recreational benefits of gardening, as well as the need for availability of fresh fruits and vegetables for everyone.

Again, congratulations to the Canyon County Multi-Taskers and kudos to all of the other groups who submitted their projects. We understand the importance of the 4-H program in the lives of youth in the community and we are confident that communities all over the country will benefit from the projects that were submitted.

Many of us here at ClassB enjoy the benefits of tending our own home vegetable gardens. It can be such an incredibly rewarding experience. As your garden grows, so do the joys of cooking home grown vegetables, sharing your crops with family and friends, and spending quality time with your fellow farmers outside in the sunshine. We hope this grant will help the Canyon County Multi-Taskers complete the generation garden that they’ve envisioned. We can’t wait to see the finished project!

The rewards from a garden can often show up in unexpected ways. Especially when you involve your family or friends. Do you have a home vegetable garden? Tell us about some of the rewards your home garden has given to you.

Want to know what last year’s 4-H Grant winner did with their $500 ClassB® Community Improvement Grant?

The Brown County 4-H SET Club’s project was to place mile markers along 6 miles of the East River Trail System. In order to do this, they split into 6 teams and collected data along the trail using surveyor grade GPS units provided by MI-Tech Services, Inc. Each member of the group got a chance to collect the GPS data and record it for their assigned section of the trail. At each marker they would spray paint the distance on the road for post installation later. Now there are brand new mile marker posts located every 10th of a mile on the East River Trail.

They included this message of thanks in their project packet:

The 4-H members of the Brown Co. SET Club are so proud to have been a part of making the East River Trail safer for all the people who use it. We are thankful to Phil Paradies, Howard Herrild, MI_Tech Services, Incl, Brown Co. 911 System and especially, Judy Wolniakowski, our 4-H youth agent for making this opportunity possible.

Thank you to the ClassB® Improvement Foundation for selecting us as 2011 community improvement grant recipients. Our 4-H SET Club is so proud to have been a part of the Brown County Geospatial East River Trail 911 Project. Thank you again!

Buying Custom 4-H T-Shirts Has Never Been Easier.

Follow these easy steps to t-shirt success and everyone in your 4-H club will love wearing their new shirts.

Step 1: Prepare your order

Decide on a 4-H Design by browsing our 4-H idea gallery Print out what you like and get your club members involved in the process. You may even want to hold a t-shirt design contest among your members with the winning design getting scanned and emailed to our artists to put on a shirt. Designs can also be customized using our online designer tool. There are so many ways to be creative and have fun while designing your club’s custom shirts!

Pick your garment. When selecting colors, be sure to check what sizes are available as not all garments come in all sizes and colors. For example, our most popular t-shirt, the Gildan 100% cotton t-shirt comes in over 40 colors but only about 25% of the colors range from youth small to adult 5X. Don’t forget, we also offer specialty garments like wicking shirts and hooded sweatshirts.

Get the price. This step is easy because we offer free, instant price estimates on our website. Remember to overestimate how many shirts you’ll need and to round up on the dollar amount, just to be safe when collecting money from the members of your club. Remember, it’s always a good idea to have a few extra shirts around to sell or give to new members. Once people see your club walking around in awesome custom shirts, they’re going to want to join.

Step 2: Place your order

Get the approval needed within your club’s leadership and decide to buy the shirts. You may need to organize a fundraiser, or allocate money from your club’s budget. One thing’s for sure, with ClassB, there are never any additional art or setup fees to worry about. Just make sure everyone is on board with the design and quoted price.

Get everyone’s sizes. Use our sizing kit to determine the right size for every member of your club. If someone is not available to provide their size, always guess a size larger. (This is also a perfect time to collect payment if the members are buying their own shirt.)

Set deadlines. Give yourself two deadlines, an internal date when all payment and sizing info needs to be collected from members, and the date you’ll submit everything to ClassB. Our standard production time is 12 business days from placement of order. So, if you need your shirts for a special event, make sure to factor that in.

Order the shirts. (We recommend getting two extra in every size except the smaller sizes.)

Step 3: Delivery day

Receive the shirts. When the shirts arrive in their boxes take them out and count them. They should look amazing because every shirt we print undergoes our multiple point inspection. (You may want to separate and label the shirts for easy distribution as well.)

Distribute the shirts to your members.

Prepare to get lots of compliments

Are you familiar with the expression, “Been there, done that, got the t-shirt” ? People say it as a joke, but there is some truth to the power of a cool t-shirt to promote an event or club. A high quality screen printed t-shirt, like the one’s seen here, are actually the finest promotional products your club can have.

Here’s a few reasons why:

First, the t-shirt is the number one product used by musicians and youth-oriented brands for promotion. This means that t-shirts require no explanation. Youth already “get” them as a form of advertising.

Second, t-shirts are the cost-effective choice for large groups. The more shirts a person orders, the more they save per shirt. Think of it this way, a cool t-shirt will make more people want to join your club, and when they do, that will make the individual cost of your member’s shirts go down. It’s a winning model!

Third, t-shirts are a lasting investment. We can’t tell you how many people we’ve talked to that still have custom t-shirts from clubs they were in 10 or even 20 years ago. Every time that shirts gets worn, it’s another advertisement for your club.

Now that you have 3 good reasons to get custom t-shirts for your club or event, come back next week for our follow up post. Steps to getting the coolest custom shirt for your club or event.

Have you kept a t-shirt from something you were a part of as a kid, or an event you attended years ago? If so, share your story in the comments!

It’s All About the Fruit! Grant Program

Deadline: April 11, 2011

Sponsored by Jamba Juice, the It’s All About the Fruit grant program provides schools and organizations with fruit trees to create engaging nutrition and gardening experiences.

20 recipients will receive fruit trees valued at $500 and the Jamba Juice It’s All About the Fruit Youth Garden Guide. Recipients will be selected based on plans to promote nutrition education, ideas for incorporating fruit tree activities into the curriculum, and ability to sustain the program over multiple years.

This April deadline will be here before you know it, so come on 4-H leaders, get those creative “juices” flowing! Learn more and download an application here.

Shade Structure Program

Deadline: April 22, 2011

Chances are, many of your 4-H club’s projects and events take place outside in the sun. Wouldn’t it be cool (no pun intended) to be able to provide shade and UV ray protection in an area where your club meets or spends a lot of time?

The American Academy of Dermatology awards grants in the amount of $8,000 each for the purchase of permanent shade structures for nonprofit organizations serving children and teens who are 18 and younger. The AAD also provides a permanent sign to be displayed near the shade structure that promotes the importance of sun safety.
